De jaren 1880 waren de hoogtijjaren van de 3wielersport. In landen als Groot-Brittannië, België, Nederland, Frankrijk, Italië, Duitsland en de Verenigde Staten werden onder grote belangstelling wedstrijden en allerlei kampioenschappen betwist. Met de komst van de tweewieler met gelijke wielen en rubber banden doofde de 3wielersport half 1890 vrijwel volledig uit.

In Groot-Brittannië kwam er in 1928 een revival met de stichting van de Tricycle Association, die er tot op de dag van vandaag een 3wielerseizoen organiseert, voornamelijk tijdraces, met vanaf 1998 ook Wereldkampioenschappen in Frankrijk en België. Nog in Groot-Brittannië worden al sinds eind 19de eeuw via de Road Records Association met 3wielfietsen tijdrit records aangevallen op verscheidene afstanden, vooral 'place to place', waar het prestigieuze "End to End" (Land's End tot John O'Groats) tot de verbeelding spreekt.

Vanaf de jaren 1980 doen 3wielfietsen hun intrede in de gehandicaptensport, nu gekend als het paralympisch circuit, maar ze werden en worden er -begrijpe wie kan- enkel geschikt geacht voor bepaalde handicaps.

Met de oprichting van 3wielweb in 2005 (3wielweb vzw in 2007) en het @Finas-Deko Asse Tricycle Team in 2006 wordt de 3wielersport in België heruitgevonden. In 2008 staat sinds zo'n 120 jaar opnieuw een 3wielerseizoen op het programma, inclusief Belgische kampioenschappen. Vanaf 2009 zijn er ook opnieuw wedstrijden op de wielerbaan.

 

The 1880's were the peak years of tricycle sport. There was a great public interest in tricycle races and championships in Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany and the United States. The arrival of the two wheeler with equal wheels and rubber tyres in the early 1890's nearly marked the end of tricycle sport.

With the foundation of the Tricycle Association in 1928 tricycle sport took off again and until today there is a regular tricycle competition in Great Britain. From 1998 onwards World Championships are organised in France and Belgium. Still in Great Britain, thanks to the Road Records Association, time trial records are being beaten since the end of the 19th century, some 'place to place' such as the prestigious 'End to End' (Land's End to John O'Groats).

In the 1980's tricycle sport was introduced in the paralympic circuit, although -sadly- only certain types of handicap were and are allowed to compete with tricycles.

With the foundation of 3wielweb in 2005 and the @Finas-Deko Asse Tricycle Team in 2006 tricycle sport is reinvented in Belgium. In 2008 for the second consecutive year and after nearly 120 years, again a tricycle competition season is planned, including Belgian Championships. From 2009 onwards also races on cycle track are programmed.
